Prunella vulgaris L.

This short perennial plant is about ½–1' tall and unbranched. Different varieties have been described, some of which are believed to be native, including this one. The native varieties are said to be taller and more erect, with leaves that are lanceolate or wedge-shaped at the base. The plant that is considered here has an erect central stem. This stem has white hairs along its four angular ridges. The opposite leaves are up to 2" long and ¾" across. They are broadly lanceolate or ovate, with short petioles, and have scattered white hairs along the central vein on their undersides. Their margins may be smooth, or have scattered blunt teeth. The stem terminates in a short spike of flowers. Each tubular flower is about ½" long and divided into 2 lips. The upper lip is light purple and functions as a hood, while the lower lip is white and fringed. The lower lip also has two lateral lobes that are smaller and light purple. The calyx is light green or reddish and quite hairy along the edges. There is no noticeable floral scent. The blooming period occurs from mid- to late summer and lasts about a month. Each flower produces 4 tiny brown, angular, finely ridged seeds, which are enclosed in the persistent calyx. Interestingly, the seeds may be distributed by raindrop ballistics – when a raindrop strikes the ridged calyx tube, this causes it to bend and rebound, flinging the seeds. The root system consists of a short central taproot.

Prunella vulgaris var. vulgaris is close relative of Prunella vulgaris var. lanceolata, but differs from the latter in its leaves ovate-oblong to ovate (vs. lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate), 1.5-6 cm long, 0.7-2.5 cm wide (vs. 1.5-4 cm long, 0.6-1 cm wide), inconspicuously undulate to subentire (vs. entire), adaxially hirtellous or subglabrous, abaxially subglabrous (vs. glabrous or sparsely villous).

Self-Heal occurs in every county of Illinois and is very common (see Distribution Map). It favors sites with a history of disturbance. Habitats include moist to mesic black soil prairies, moist meadows along rivers and lakes, thickets, openings in forests, woodland borders, pastures, and abandoned fields. The variety of Self-Heal that is commonly observed in lawns is thought to be a Eurasian variety, which is shorter and roots at the nodes of the leaves.

Prunella vulgaris (known as common self-heal or heal-all)[1] is an herbaceous plant in the genus Prunella.
Self-heal is edible: the young leaves and stems can be eaten raw in salads; the whole plant can be boiled and eaten as a potherb; and the aerial parts of the plant can be powdered and brewed in a cold infusion to make a beverage.[citation needed]
Description[edit]
Prunella vulgaris grows 5 to 30 cm high[2] (2-12inches), with creeping, self-rooting, tough, square, reddish stems branching at leaf axis.[3]
The leaves are lance shaped, serrated, and reddish at tip, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long and 1.5 cm (half an inch) broad, and growing in opposite pairs down the square stem.[3] Each leave has 3-7 veins that shoot off of the middle vein to the margin. The stalks of the leaves are generally short, but can be up to 5 cm (2 inches) long.[4]
The flowers grow from a clublike, somewhat square, whirled cluster; immediately below this club are a pair of stalkless leaves standing out on either side like a collar. Flowers are two lipped and tubular. The top lip is a purple hood, and the bottom lip is often white; it has three lobes with the middle lobe being larger and fringed upwardly. Flowers bloom at different times depending on climate and other conditions, but mostly in summer (from June to August in the USA).[3]
Self-heal propagates both by seed and vegetatively by creeping stems that root at the nodes.[5]
Range and habitat[edit]
Heal-all is a perennial herb found throughout Europe, Asia and North America, as well as most temperate climates. Its origin seems to be European[citation needed], though it has been documented in other countries since before any history of travel[citation needed]. In the Republic of Ireland it is currently abundant in the west in the counties Galway and Clare, the southwest in Kerry, the south coast, and is also found around the central basin of Ireland[citation needed]. It is often found growing in moist areas, waste ground, grassland, woodland edges, and usually in basic and neutral soils.[3][6]
Edibility[edit]
Heal-all is edible, and can be used in salads, soups, stews, and boiled as a pot herb. The Cherokee cooked and ate the young leaves. The Nlaka'pamux drank a cold infusion of the whole plant as a common beverage.[7] The plant contains vitamins A, C, and K, as well as flavonoids and rutin.[8]
Herbalism[edit]
Self-heal is taken internally as a medicinal tea for sore throat, fever, diarrhea, internal bleeding, and to alleviate liver and heart maladies. Topically, a poultice of the plant is applied to irritated skin, as from stinging nettle toxins. A poultice of self-heal also serves well as a disinfecting agent and is used to pack wounds in the absence of other wound-care material.[9][10] It was considered by the Chinese to "change the course of a chronic disease".[7] In the traditional Austrian medicine Prunella vulgaris herb has been used internally as tea for treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract and infections.[11]
Chemistry[edit]
The plant's active chemical constituents are betulinic acid, D-camphor, D-fenchone, cyanidin, delphinidin, hyperoside, manganese, lauric acid, oleanolic acid, rosmarinic acid, myristic acid, rutin, linoleic acid, ursolic acid, beta-sitosterol, lupeol, and tannins.[8][12][13][14]
In vitro studies have shown it to have an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of pseudomonas, Bacillus typhi, E. coli, Mycobacterium tuberculi.[15] It is also showing promise in research for AIDS,[16] and allergies.[17][18]

Grasslands and shola forests
Stems 20-30 cm, ascending, base much branched, purple-red, sparsely strigose or subglabrous. Petiole 0.7-2.5 cm, upper ones shorter; leaf blade ovate-oblong to ovate, 1.5-6 cm long, 0.7-2.5 cm wide, glabrous to sparsely villous, base truncate to broadly cuneate-decurrent, margin inconspicuously undulate to subentire, adaxially hirtellous or subglabrous, abaxially subglabrous, apex obtuse to rounded. Spikes 2-4 cm, sessile; floral leaves similar to cauline leaves, sessile or short petiolate, subovate; bracts purplish, broadly cordate, ca. 7 mm long, 11 mm wide, cuspidate, veins sparsely hispid. Calyx campanulate, ca. 1 cm, sparsely hispid, tube ca. 4 mm; upper lip suboblate, subtruncate; lower lip narrower, teeth acuminate. Corolla purplish or white, ca. 1.3 cm, slightly exserted, glabrous; tube ca. 7 mm, base ca. 1.5 mm wide, gradually dilated to ca. 4 mm wide at throat; upper lip subcircular, ca. 5.5 mm in diameter, ± galeate, emarginate; lower lip ca. 1/2 as long as upper lip, middle lobe subobcordate, fringed; lateral lobes oblong, spreading, minute. Anterior stamens very long. Nutlets oblong-ovoid, ca. 1.8 mm long, 0.9 mm wide, slightly 1-furrowed.
