Description:
Erect perennial herb, up to c. 30 cm tall, growing from a small woody rootstock. Roots with small tubers, up to 3 cm long. Stems 4-angled, with appressed hairs and scattered sessile glands, usually denser towards the inflorescence. Leaves usually strictly in a basal rosette, sometimes also 1-2 pairs of leaves along the stem, elliptic up to 12 × 5 cm, mostly hairless but gland-dotted; margin sinuate-crenate; petiole 5-20 mm long. Inflorescence with many 6-flowered verticils, 10-25 mm apart. Corolla pink to mauve, sometimes with white markings, 2-lipped; lower lip cup-shaped, enclosing the stamens.
Worldwide distribution:
DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
