TY - JOUR T1 - A reexamination of North American Satureja sl (Lamiaceae) in light of molecular evidence JF - Brittonia Y1 - 1998 A1 - P Cantino A1 - S Wagstaff SP - 63–70 AB - A reexamination of North American Satureja s.1. (Lamiaceae) in light of molecular evidence. Brittonia 50: 63-70. 1998.–Satureja s.1. (Lamiaceae) is a large complex (ca. 225 spp.) that is variably treated as comprising from one to as many as 17 genera. The North American representatives are usually assigned to Calamintha, Clinopodium, Micromeria, Piloblephis, or Satureja. A recent chloroplast DNA restriction site analysis indicates that inclusion of Satureja s.str., Micromeria, and Piloblephis in the group renders it non-monophyletic. After exclusion of these three genera, a study of morphological variation in the remainder of the complex suggests that it is best treated as three genera, two of which do not occur in North America (Cyclotrichium and "Obtegomeria" [Doroszenko, ined., to be validated else- where]). The third comprises ca. 100 species, 11 of them native to North America north of Mexico. With Satureja s.str, excluded, the name with priority for the latter genus is Clinopodium. The indigenous North American species and their more frequently used synonyms are tabulated. A new combination, Clinopodium chandleri, is made. Mentha suaveolens showed considerable chemical variation between samples from Spain and Algeria. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. Baker. The genus Coleus has been included in Plectranthus by most recent workers (e.g., Adams, 1972; Agnew, 1974; Codd, 1975; Brummitt, 1992) following the proposals of the present author (Morton, 1962). Also Solenostemon, and Isodon are regarded as separate genera, distinct from Plectranthus (Morton, 1962; Codd, 1975; Li, 1988; Ryding, 1992, 1993). As part of a revision of the Ethiopian species in this group of genera, several new names and combinations are needed in order to bring the account into line with current generic concepts. The following changes are proposed. The data suggest that the study could have been done in a smaller cage. The honey was water white with a relatively high fructose content and a relatively low sucrose content. The results of a taste panel, relative to aroma, taste and overall quality, were mixed. This suggests to the authors that when making statements about subjective honey qualities, an attempt should be made to indicate the range of perceptions that the honey elicits.
