EOL Text
Comments: Apparently restricted to limestone hills and outcrops, including road embankments. 1370-1980 m elevation.
Hedeoma costata var. pulchella occurs in a broad spectrum of desertic habitats, from colluvial fans in desert scrub at lower elevations (400-750 m) to pine woodlands at higher elevations (2000 m). Substrates are mostly derived from limestone (Henrickson and Johnston, A flora of the Chihuahuan Desert region, in preparation).

Note: For many non-migratory species, occurrences are roughly equivalent to populations.
Estimated Number of Occurrences: 81 to >300
Comments: Hedeoma costata var. pulchella ranges from the southwestern U.S. to northern Mexico and occupies a broad spectrum of habitats. Although no occurrence information has been collected, well over 100 occurrences can be expected.

Reasons: Hedeoma costata var. pulchella (Greene) Irving occupies a wide variety of nondescript habitats across a global range from the southwestern United States to Zacatecas, Mexico. Although no occurrence information is available, hundreds if not thousands of populations can be expected. The other variety, Hedeoma costata Gray var. costata, occurs in more mesic sites at middle to higher elevations in the Mexican mountains from Nuevo Le?n south to Hidalgo and Chiapas (Irving, 1980), and might be ranked G5T3T4.
Comments: Threats to Hedeoma costata var. pulchella are unknown and, when compared to globally rare plants of the region, relatively non-existent or at best very local. The taxon is globally widespread and occupies a broad spectrum of habitats, and it is hard to imagine a suite of serial or simultaneous threats that could adversely affect the taxon throughout its range.
