Shrubs 1-3 m tall; branchlets, petioles, and cymes densely gray-yellow stellate tomentose. Petiole robust, 1-2.5 cm; leaf blade ovate-elliptic to elliptic or narrowly oblong-lanceolate, 6-17 X 2-8 cm, abaxially gray-yellow stellate tomentose and yellow glandular, adaxially minutely hispid, base cuneate, obtuse, or rounded, margin serrate, apex acuminate or caudate. Cymes 3-4 cm across; peduncle 1.5-2.5 cm; bracts small. Calyx cup-shaped, gray-yellow stellate tomentose; teeth 4, triangular. Corolla purple to purplish, ca. 2.5 mm, glabrous. Stamens ca. 5 mm. Ovary glabrous. Fruit purple, ca. 2 mm in diam.

Callicarpa formosana is a species of beautyberry. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant. The drupes resembling tiny clusters of berries are light-purple. The flowers are white. The tree is sometimes used to make herbal medicine. This species ranges from Taiwan to southern Japan.
